SCOTLAND VACATION 2004
May 18 - May 30, 2004

JOURNAL ENTRY 6
entry begun on May 21st, 2004
at 16:05 Newcastle Time

(We just left the Newcastle train platform, and should soon be at Berwick Upon Tweed.)

We slept unhindered for a good eight or nine hours before getting up just after seven this morning. A quick start commenced, with showers for both of us (we'd also both taken one the night before - you seem to need a lot of them in London, it gets quite grimy in a "your boogers are black" sort of way), then down for another round of the Rushmore's wonderful breakfasts. We were deciding what to do between then and our train's 13:00 departure time, and having trouble with coming to any conclusions. Perhaps back to Marble Arch for a better look and a walk around, or shopping back on Oxford Street. We went across to a bakery for a sweet roll and latte, and agreed we'd walk towards Putney and stop to take pictures at the old Brompton Cemetery. I stopped along the way at a local news agent for a Diet Coke.

The cemetery was covered in moss and was breathtakingly beautiful, with squirrels running rampant throughout. There was a point at which we were surrounded by a street gang of six or seven of the little rodents, and though they ultimately dispersed, it is the first time I can recall being intimidated by squirrels.

We walked back from the cemetery to the hotel to gather our luggage and check out. We would miss the Rushmore, because the staff and accommodations were so great. However, we were pretty much done with London. The lifestyle was very frenetic, it was a pretty dirty place as far as the air went, and everybody was in a mad rush to wherever their next destination was. We were ready for a place where you didn't have to shower twice a day to stay relatively clean, a place where we could just relax, meander, take our time about things, and "take in" our vacation a bit more.

We were ready for Kelso.
